Getting started — quick overview
Trezor Start walks you through: unboxing, verifying device authenticity, installing Trezor Suite, creating or recovering a wallet, and essential safety steps (record your recovery seed, never share it, keep firmware up to date).
Step-by-step setup
1
Unbox & verify
Inspect packaging and device for tampering. Visit trezor.io/start for authenticity checks and tamper-proofing guidance.
2
Install Trezor Suite
Download the official Trezor Suite desktop app for secure wallet management. Use the download links on the official start page.
3
Create or recover wallet
Choose to create a new wallet (generate a new recovery seed) or recover using an existing seed. Write the seed down on a physical medium — never store it digitally.
4
Finalize & update
Confirm device firmware is up to date and test receiving a small amount before transferring larger funds.
Security essentials
- Never share your recovery seed. Trezor staff or support will never ask for it.
- Verify downloads and checksums on the official page before installing.
- Use a strong passphrase if you need additional protection (optional, but treat it as a second seed).
- Keep firmware and Trezor Suite updated.
How to verify downloads
After downloading installers from trezor.io/start, compare checksums or verify PGP signatures if provided. Example sha256 check:
$ sha256sum trezor-suite-setup.AppImage # compare the printed checksum with the one on trezor.io/start
Recovery seed best practices
- Write the seed on the provided recovery card or a metal backup.
- Store backups in separate secure locations (e.g., safe deposit box, home safe).
- Do not photograph, scan, or type the seed into any connected device or cloud service.
